Bear Mountain Software- Topper:
Technical Overview:
There are four different modules to TOPPER all
incorporated in to one, easy to manage product. Each module
allows you to perform a specific set of tests and set thresholds
that indicate that a test is or is not performing within your
pre-configured specifications. Topper then allows you to specify
the types of alert notifications you want to receive and the
escalation levels of these alerts. You can set warning levels,
minor alert levels and major alert levels, regardless of which
module(s) you wish to implement. Notifications can be sent via
GUI, Pager, Email, SNMP traps, and can execute external objects.
Important to note as well, is that NO AGENT
SOFTWARE has to be loaded on the servers that are
being monitored!
TOPPER for
NT Server Management monitors NT Performance, NT Services
and Events logged into the NT event logs (System, Security,
Application, Directory Services, DNS Server, and File
Replication Service). From a performance perspective, TOPPER
will monitor any of the NT Performance Objects, such disk and
processor utilization, and alert you as to when the object falls
outside your selected thresholds. With monitoring NT Services, a
service is either running or it isn't. TOPPER can check the
status of the service to see if it is running and can also
perform automated restarts of the service, if you choose. By
providing this level of monitoring, TOPPER can alert you as to
potential trouble spots so that you can take action before your
users are impacted.
TOPPER for
Exchange Management provides all of the functionality of the
NT Server module, and additional capabilities such as monitoring
of MTA processes, work queues, connectors and message probing.
TOPPER for
Messaging Management provides analysis of your email service
levels and response times. Are messages getting from point A to
point B in a specified period of time? You can set acceptable
levels of response times and if mail is not being received
within an acceptable timeframe, alerts can be sent to the
appropriate staff via any of the mechanisms mentioned above. The
Messaging Management module also provides functionality to
perform "heartbeat testing". Heartbeats tell TOPPER
that an element in the messaging environment is alive and
functioning, such as a virus software download that is supposed
to occur every Friday afternoon at 2:45pm. If TOPPER doesn't
receive confirmation that this event occurred within a set
threshold of time, it creates an alarm and alerts via the
mechanisms mentioned above.
TOPPER for IP
Management permits testing of IP-based services to verify
that they are accessible and functioning. It can query those
services and their response times. If a response fails or falls
outside the range of acceptable response times, TOPPER will
create an alarm. TOPPER's IP tests include IP pings, IP mail
port testing, DNS entry verification and timing HTTP and FTP
downloads.
