Today ENow announced new Exchange 2010 monitoring and reporting functionality as part of their Feature Pack 1 release for Mailscape V4.5. Mailscape is an award-winning total systems management tool that combines Exchange monitoring, reporting, and administrative features in one solution. The most notable enhancement in this update is a new feature that allows administrators to verify, monitor and report on the hottest new Exchange 2010 feature —Database Availability Groups

Capacity Planning for the Cloud

Joshua Hoffman, lead geek at AppAssure Software, recently highlighted a really interesting podcast. The podcast, hosted by Dana Gardner of E-Commerce Times, discusses the changing approach to capacity planning that has begun to develop as a result of cloud computing’s rising star.

Joining Dana in the conversation is Neil Ashizawa, manager of HP's Software as a Service (SaaS) Products and Cloud Solutions. Dana and Neil discuss the fact that, as a result of the ability of cloud computing environments to be elastic – that is, to expand and contract themselves based on need and demand – the way that we, as IT professionals, plan those environments needs to change.

Neil put it the following way:

Old-fashioned capacity planning focuses on the peak usage of the application, and it had to, because when you were deploying applications in-house, you had to take into consideration that peak usage case. At the end of the day, you had to be provisioned correctly with respect to compute power. Oftentimes with long procurement cycles, you'd have to plan for that.

In the cloud, because you have this idea of elasticity, where you can scale up your compute resources when you need them, and scale them back down, obviously that adds another dimension to old-school capacity planning.

This obviously has some wide-reaching implications on virtually every aspect of IT infrastructure planning (including how we plan for demand on our Exchange servers, web servers, SQL servers and so on.) And needless to say, our adoption of virtualization technology has a substantial impact as well.

TVS now supports – over 200 email archive migration combinations!

This new release adds large-scale, audited restorations into Microsoft Exchange servers; movement of data to and from cloud-based archives, and extraction out of legacy iLumin archives. The new Microsoft Exchange Connector enables all supported archive formats to send data directly into Exchange servers. As well as migrating the contents of 3rd party archives into the new Exchange 2010 archiving facility, organizations can use this connector to reconstruct vital email evidence archived from journal mailboxes such as BCC’d emails and emails sent to distribution lists. Mail Attender Improves Email Management and Transfer Processes, Addresses Outlook PST Management, Corporate Email Compliance and Storage.

Mail Attender Version 4.5 is sporting a new look, similar to its sister product Archive Attender, and has several new features. Chief amongst these is a new rule type: Transfer Rules. Transfer Rules allow you to move data from an e-mail store being managed by Mail Attender to another managed e-mail store regardless of where they are in relation to each other.

For example, to move e-mail from one PST file on one server to a PST file on another server, both files would have to be connected directly. The new Transfer Rules allow someone to first, selectively identify the messages to be transferred; and second, export and transmit these messages, through one or more MAE installations; and import the messages into the destination e-mail store.

How does it work? Transfer destination targets are assigned for each e-mail store needing to be processed with these new Transfer Rules. There will be a new tab on the properties pages for each e-mail store to view and edit the list of destination targets.

There can be as many destination Targets as needed, but each must have a unique name. In the example above, the file FriarTuck.pst has a Target called "Buddy" of RobinHood.pst. Targets can also be assigned in mass by importing a list, similar to the "Owners Template" feature.

Once the destination Targets are configured, the Transfer Rule can be created. The main visual difference between a Transfer Rule and a Standard Rule is the "Destination" tab instead of an "Actions" tab.

On this tab, the destination Target is chosen by name. For each e-mail store the Transfer Rule processes, the corresponding e-mail store is targeted. When a message qualifies (depending on the condition added), the message is exported and transmitted, or "Transferred" from that e-mail store to the corresponding Target e-mail store.

Other options include defining the Target folder of the destination and what to do with the original message once the transfer is successful.

This new feature promises to provide yet another tool in your arsenal for managing e-mail content. Now your options are no longer limited to exporting, deleting, forwarding and so on, but will now include the ability to move specific messages from one e-mail store to another by simply configuring and running MAE Transfer Rules.

Email Archive Migration Preplanning Checklist

An email archive migration is a complex project that requires careful planning. Regardless of the reason for your need to migrate archived data (more on that below), you must consider issues such as chain of custody, data discovery requirements, data conversion time, and—of course—total migration project cost.

How you address each of those issues depends on factors unique to your environment: your source archive system, your target archive system, your volume of archived data, whether you opt for a manual services-based archive migration or an automated software-driven migration, and much more.

We’ve prepared an email archive migration project checklist to help you plan your archive migration and thereby avoid unforeseen pitfalls. Download a copy here if any of these scenarios sound familiar:

-Business Change. Is your company going through a merger, acquisition or divestiture, or do staff or entire departments often re-locate between locations? Archived records will almost certainly need to be amalgamated, extracted or moved to reflect organizational change.
-Archive Architecture Upgrade. Archive vendors often have to re-architect their product to improve performance and scalability. This may mean you need to migrate data stored in a legacy archive format to take full advantage of a new archive architecture.
-Improve scalability. Are retrievals or archive runs taking too long? Are you facing major infrastructure upgrades to accommodate growth? If your original archive is not ‘up to the job’ of servicing your needs, a move to better/newer technology will save money and improve service levels.
-Reduce Cost of Ownership. Is your IT team spending too much time and expense ‘nursing’ your existing archive: restarting stopped processes, responding to help desk calls, etc? To quote a customer that migrated from a legacy archive platform: “with [the previous solution] we went from being full time Exchange administrators to full time archive administrators”.
-E-Discovery Capability. Is your archive platform failing to provide adequate discovery and litigation support services? Secure, audited and rapid transitioning of your archived data to an alternative platform or specialist service with the additional discovery capabilities your organization needs could save your company millions.
-Protection Against Obsolescence. Has your incumbent archive supplier fallen by the wayside? Will your original storage choice last to meet evolving retention needs? Although you chose the best technoloy at the time, if were an early adopter these are likely scenarios and you need to ensure your data does not get locked in.
-Change in IT Model. Does your organization want to outsource its IT services or use cloud computing? If so, your users will want to maintain access to legacy data via the new service.
-Better Support. Has the quality of service offered by your original vendor diminished? An unsupported version or unresponsive supplier could threaten the ongoing accessibility of your data.
