Groups are dynamic – they need to change as members change job responsibilities, roles and locations.  In the critical information flow of any enterprise, if the group information is not accurate the result may be that important information does not get to the right people.  Distribution lists and security groups are created and maintained manually by the administrator – an expensive and time consuming task.  With a corporate rate of change estimated in double digits, it is understandable that a lot of meetings start with an argument about who got the information.
